New Bangladesh Nobel laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus, is being sued for defamation by a politician for Yunus's recent remarks about Bangladesh's politicians, reports a Bangladesh newspaper.
Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus said in a recent interview with Agency France-Press that Bangladeshi politicians work for money only, and do not pursue any ideology.
After this inflammatory comment about Bangladesh's political leaders, Advocate Nazrul Islam Chunnu, Joint General Secretary of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, or JCD, filed a defamation case against the laureate at a district magistrate court in Mymensingh.
"It is about power, power to make money. There is not ideological things, simply who gets the bigger booty," Dr. Yunus told AFP during the interview.
Leading political parties in Bangladesh, Awami League and Bangladesh National Party, also strongly criticized Dr. Yunus's comment.
The district magistrate court has referred the case to another court for judicial inquiry into the allegations. The court has fixed March 27 as the next hearing date.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2006 for his pioneering work in micro-credit lending for the poor. #
