Dhaka: Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed said yesterday that he is looking forward to the visit of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Burma General Maung Aye.
The head of the caretaker government said this when outgoing Burma ambassador, U Nyan Lynn, made a farewell call on him at his office yesterday.
The Burmese ambassador said General Maung Aye will likely visit Bangladesh by the end of this year.
The visit of General Maung Aye was tentatively scheduled to take place last year, but was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances, according to an official.
Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed also said that he is willing to resolve the issues of repatriation of the Rohingya refugees and the maritime border demarcation through discussions with Burma.
The Chief Adviser and outgoing Burma ambassador discussed many issues of bilateral interest in their meeting, including the renting of arable land from Burma for cooperation in agriculture, direct banking arrangements and enriched shipping links to promote trade, and road links between Burma and Bangladesh.
The Burma envoy thanked the Chief Adviser for sending relief materials to Burma soon after the powerful Cyclone Nargis hit the country in May.
The Chief Adviser expressed heartfelt sympathy for the people of Burma and the government over the death, injuries, and widespread loss of property from the cyclone. "Bangladesh, as a next-door neighbor, will stand beside Burma in its challenging time," he added.
He also expressed his gratitude as Burma had sent rice to Bangladesh after Cyclone Sidr struck the Bay of Bengal.
