Sittwe: Police raided two monasteries in Sittwe yesterday night in search of monks who are wanted by authorities, said an abbot from Sittwe.
The abbot said, "A police force led by the Inspector Soe Win from police station number 2 with the help of some Rayaka ward authorities raided Kyin Thi Nat Kong monastery and Say Gri monastery last night."
Kyin The Nat Kong monastery is located in Ta Rar Thi Su Ward and Say Gri monastery is located in Bauk Thi Su Ward in Sittwe.
"I heard the police were searching for some monk leaders who prepared to stage a demonstration yesterday in Sittwe on the occasion of the historic 8-8-88 uprising," the abbot said. The police rummaged through all the rooms as well as the boxes of monks at the monasteries, but no one was arrested during the raids.
According to a source from Sittwe, security has been tight in Sittwe recently and many armed forces have been deployed at key places in the city.
Meanwhile, information is being spread among the people that monks in Sittwe are preparing to stage another demonstration today. #
