39 Burmese Citizens Arrested in Cox's Bazar

Dhaka: 39 Burmese citizens were arrested by Bangladesh police in the border town Cox's Bazar over the past two days for illegally entering the country, according to an official report.

The report stated that Bangladesh police arrested 39 Rohingya Muslims from Burma during raids that were conducted in several different places in Cox's Bazar over the last two days.

Most of the those arrested had been working in Cox's Bazar as rickshaw pullers in order to survive. The Bangladesh police seized 30 rickshaws that belonged to those arrested.

Thousands of Burmese Muslim are living throughout Cox's Bazar and working various jobs. According to a police source, three separate cases have been filed with the police station against the Burmese citizens on charges of illegally entering Bangladesh territory.

This is the first time that raids have been conducted to round up undocumented migrants in Cox's Bazar, although Bangladesh authorities have previously arrested many Burmese Muslim in the Chittagong Hill Tract Area.
