Dhaka: Burma and Bangladesh agreed to demarcate the disputed maritime boundary between the two countries.

The decision came at a high level two-day meeting between Burma and Bangladesh that was held in Chittagong in Bangladesh on 8 and 9 January.

The agreement between the two countries is accommodating the demands of both equidistance and equity of resources as the guiding principles.

Both sides disclosed the meeting was fruitful and beneficial. The next meeting will be held in Burma in the month of April.

In the meeting, a 13-member Burmese delegation led by Burmese Foreign Minister Maung Myint while the Bangladesh team was led by MD Kursed Alam.

The two-day meeting was the first of its kind after Bangladesh officially asked in October 2009 for arbitration to settle the issues on maritime boundaries with India and Burma.

During the meeting, Bangladesh proposed fixing the maritime boundary following the principles of equity of the resources while Burma recommended line-based equidistance system for demanding maritime boundary.
