Yangon: Burma and Bangladesh will play a round of friendly volleyball matches from 12 to 18 January in Rangoon, the former capital of Burma, in order to promote relations between the two neighboring countries.

The friendship match will start at 3:00 pm today at the first gymnasium of the Thuwana sports grounds in Rangoon.

According to an official source, the friendhisp games will continue on 14, 16, and 18 January in Rangoon after the first match.

This is the first national-level friendly sport game between Burma and Bangladesh after high tension caused by a maritime dispute in November 2008.

Relations between Burma and Bangladesh are now improving as the disagreements are being solved by peaceful bilateral negotiations.

Burma's Deputy Foreign Minister Maung Myint visited Bangladesh twice within a month to resolve some issues, including the Burmese Muslim refugee crisis and the maritime dispute.

The Director General of Bangladesh Rifles, Major General Mainul Islam, is also attending a four-day director general level meeting in Rangoon along with five other Bangladesh military officials in order to solve the border problem with Burma.

According to a local border source, Bangladesh Rifles and Burma's border security force, Nasaka, have helped build mutual relations by playing friendly volleyball matches along the border in both Burma and Bangladesh.
