Maungdaw: The Maungdaw District authority on Friday summoned all carpenters, both businesses and individuals, in Buthidaung and Maungdaw Townships to dispatch them to the model village construction sites, said an official from Maungdaw District.

"The carpenters already left on the day for Nyung Chaung Village in Buthidaung Township where the authority has constructed some model villages to be settled by Burman settlers from Rangoon," he said.

The construction of the model villages is planned to be complete by the end of February. Because of that, the district authority has summoned all carpenters in two townships for the construction of the model villages.

A large number of carpenters in the townships have stopped their owned work and businesses have had to cancel their contracts to build homes for local people in the area because the authority has forcibly summoned them for the model village construction.

A housewife of a carpenter from Maungdaw said, “The authority would pay wages for my husband in the model village construction but it is a big problem here that he had to stop all his private work in my town.”

The authorities in the area usually summon carpenters in the areas whenever they need those carpenters for construction of model villages hastily.

According to a local source, a large number of Burmese settlers from Burma proper will arrive at Buthidaung very soon to live in five model villages in Buthidaung Township that are being constructed by authority.
