19 foreign nationals were detained by the Bangladesh Navy for illegally fishing near the St. Martin Island close to Burma-Bangladesh border on last Monday according to a Bangladeshi authority statement.

The fisher men from Taiwanese and Thai fishing trawlers were brought to Chittagong, the second city of Bangladesh for the further legal actions.

The two trawlers are caught with 6,000 kg of fish and some foreign currencies says the statement.

Many Southeast Asian fishing boats entered the seas near the Burma-Bangladesh border areas for the illegal fishing. The Burmese Navy generally allowed them to fish after taking bribe from them says a Burmese fisherman in the border area.

St. Martin Island locates at the mouth of Naff River which is also the border line between Burma and Bangladesh. The same Burmese source also comments that these two trawlers might have drifted into the Bangladesh territory unknowingly from the Burma waters, at which they paid bribe for illegal fishing to its Navy. #
