Bangladesh Opposes Burma Issue at UNSC

7/21/2006

Bangladesh, along with the other 22 member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement, opposed the Burma issue being submitted for discussion to the United Nations Security Council, reported a state run newspaper on 13 July.

Among the 22 NAM countries opposing the issue are India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, ASEAN member nations, Nigeria, Egypt, Cuba, and Venezuela.

The letter sent to UNSC by Mr. Hamidon Ali, Chairman of the coordinating Bureau of the NAM group, claimed that the current crisis in Burma does not pose a threat to world peace and security, and therefore it is not necessary to discuss the issue within UNSC.

This opposition has come about as the US government is pushing to have the Burma issue brought before the UNSC for a resolution.

Burma democracy groups and supporting countries strongly believe that the present Burma crisis is a threat to regional security and stability, and is an issue that needs to be dealt with by the Security Council.

A Burmese opposition leader staying in Bangladesh says that the present crisis in Burma poses threat to regional security as multiple problems are arising in neighboring countries of Burma as a result of the large refugee populations, human trafficking, and drug trafficking. #
