Eleven Rakhine civil society groups have urged the judiciary of the Rakhine People's Revolutionary Government to deliver justice for the horrific rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl from Hpa Pyo Village, Minbya Township, Rakhine State.
"This terrible and cruel act is a serious offense that endangers not just the innocent young girl and her family, but also society as a whole," the statement noted.
The organizations that submitted the request include: • Rakhaing Women's Initiative Organization (RWIO) • Women Generation (WG) • Purple World • Ann Women Generation • We Are One • Center for Social Research and Development (CSRD) • Arakkha Foundation • All Arakan Youth Organizations Network (AAYON) • Mrauk-U Youths Association (MUYA) • Generation • Indigenous Social Development Organization (ISDO) • Mongbra Youth Association.
The requirements are "(1) Perform a comprehensive, unbiased, and prompt inquiry into the sexual assault and killing of a young girl in Hpa Pyaw village, determine the culprits, and impose the harshest legal penalties on them without leniency.
(2) Guarantee social equity for the victims and their relatives while imposing a penalty.
(3) Implement strong strategies to avert future violence targeted at women and children in the Arakan region."
On May 2, 2025, a 9-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and killed in the village of Hpa Pyaw, located in Minbya Township.
The offender hails from Myebon Township. Maung Mya Than, a person in his 30s residing on Ngaman Ye Island, was apprehended and held by the AA Police Department of Public Security and Law Enforcement (DLEPS) on May 6.
