Htet Aung, Narinjara News, 25 February 2022
Former Rakhine State Prime Minister U Nyi Pu and former State municipal minister U Min Aung, who were sentenced to almost 10 years in prisons, face more charges.
On 23 February, the special prison court in Sittwe prison continued its hearing on the case relating to rigging of votes in the 2020 national election.
U Win Aung, a lawyer representing them, informed that in the next court hearing the judge will decide their fates following the arguments from both sides.
The former Prime Minister is charged by the Rakhine State deputy director of Election Commission, U Thurin Htut on 8 December 2021 under section 130 (a) of the Penal Code.
The former municipal minister was charged under section 109 for aiding electoral fraud.
"It is still not clear what would happen as the charge is framed by the government. But we are doing our best to resolve the case,” said the lawyer.
Earlier, on 19 morning the Sittwe special prison court sentenced Nyi Pu to nine years and Min Aung to seven years in jail under section 55 of the anti-corruption law. They were also sentenced to two years in prison with labour under section 505 (b) of the Penal Code for defaming the State authority.
Nyi Pu's wife, Daw Win Kyi said that she had nothing to say about the lawsuit. She was however worried about her husband being old (65 years old).
U Nyi Pu is also one of the top leaders belonging to the National League for Democracy.
