IDP refugee arrested by junta soldiers in Kyauk Taw

An IDP from Kawi Yadana camp in Kyauk Taw, 80 miles north of Sittwe, has been arrested by the junta soldiers.


Identified as U Kyaw Hein, the refugee was picked up by the armed personnel on the night of 19 July.


A villager, who wanted anonymity, informed that Kyaw Hein hails from Miwa village and he escaped the Kawi Yadana refugee camp. Later he was arrested in the night hours as went to the train station for medical treatments.

"He was picked up when he went for treatments. I tried to call him but a soldier responded in Burmese language informing me that he was arrested,” he added.

Kyaw Hein’s wife alleged that her husband was tied with a rope on Gassapanadi bridge, but she is yet to receive any official notice from the military council.

Incidents of arrests of civilians in Rakhine State by the army personnel have gone up in the last few months. Since the battle between the security forces and Arakan Army members broke out in
northern Maungdaw township on 18 July, the military atrocities began.

On 20 July, Kyin Chaung village administrator, two other villagers and two tourists were arrested from Pattaw Pyin border guard checkpoint.

On the previous day, two individuals from Ponna Kyunt town were arrested by the army. A few checkpoints have been opened on route and waterways where a strict on travelers has been ensured.
