AA releases township administrator with his driver after weeklong detention

The Arakan Army (AA) released the Ponna Kyunt township administrator and his driver on Saturday after a weeklong detention.

Administrator U Hla Shwe (53 years old) and his driver U Maung Kyaw Naing (30) were released between Yongu and Kyauk Sike villages under Ponna Kyunt Township, which is 16 miles north of the Rakhine capital city of Sittwe.

The ULA/AA statement revealed that they were detained for some queries. As they are not related to the military, both of them were released accordingly.

The AA members picked up both the individuals while they were returning by a car from a pilgrimage to Maha Muni pagoda in Kyauk Taw township on 17 July in the afternoon hours.

Soon after the incident, the military council arrested U Thee Khaing and U Saw Aye Maung  from Ponna Kyunt on 19 July and shockingly both went missing with no contacts with their families till date.
