The Burmese authority has extended the term ofmilitary council for another six months.
On 31 July, a meeting of the National Defense and SecurityCouncil (NDSC), held in NayPyiTaw, took the decision to extend themilitary council’s tenure.
The junta took over the political power on 1February 2021 ousting the democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi’sgovernment.
According to provisions of the 2008Constitution, the state of emergency can be declared for up to two years and itcan be extended once for one year and two times for six months.
Acting President U Myint Swe, former speaker ofPeople's Hluttaw U Ti Khun Myat, military council chief of defensestaff general Min Aung Hlaing, deputy C-in-C lieutenant general Soe Win, Uniondefense minister general Mya Tun Oo, NDSC members and many invitees werepresent in the meeting.
It is understood that the ruling military council hasbeen planning to hold the national election in August 2023, after the militaryregime completes two years.
National League for Democracy, NUG and the international communityhave already objected to the plan for the polls, apprehending the credibility.
