Sittwe resident arrested by the army suspecting link to AA

Narinjara News, 23 August 2022

A two-wheeler driver from Thein Than village under Sittwe township of Rakhine State was arrested by the junta forces on 22 August suspecting his links to the Arakan Army, said a family member.

The family members of U Maung San Win (about 50 years old) informed Narinjara News that he was arrested from the military checkpoint at the entrance of the village, while he was returning from Toe Kan village in the evening hours.

"The village administrator told us that he was arrested by army for on suspicion of links with the AA," they added.

His daughter, a tenth-grade student, however asserted that he was no way connected with the AA.

"My father is a farmer only. He was busy with field work. After his work, he often delivers alcohol to customers,” she added.

She claimed that they have no idea where U Maung San Win is kept. He has his wife and one young son besides the daughter in the family.

A sole bread earner for the family, U Maung San Win is suffering from diabetics and high blood pressure.

Currently, the Rakhine State is facing conflicts as the AA and soldiers are fighting in various places. Many innocent civilians are arrested by the authorities for suspecting their associations with the AA. No less that  50 people have been arrested and charged under sections of the law.
