60-year-old Maungdaw woman killed in artillery shell explosion

A 60-year-old Rakhine woman was killed on the spot when an artillery shell exploded inside Min Gyi village under Maungdaw township, a western Mynamar town bordering Bangladesh.

At around 9 am today the shell exploded which killed Daw Mae Tha Sein.

A female teacher who took shelter in a monastery informed that the explosion took place at 9:10 am in her house.

“I don't know from which side it was shot. No other people were injured. Now the entire village is deserted and most of the villagers arrive in the monastery,” she added.

The Burmese forces and  Arakan Army members have been fighting fiercely in the area of  Maungdaw Township since 26 August. Khamong Sit area, where an army strategy unit is stationed in the north of Maungdaw township also witnessed a battle.

The border guards of Kyin Chaung camp have been firing artillery shells to prevent  AA members.  

"The children in the camp are crying as they are hungry. The electricity in the village was cut down and the telephones went out of order,” said a local teacher who is taking shelter in the camp inside the monastery.

The ongoing conflicts between the two armed forces have compelled  over 1000 villagers to flee their places for some safer places.
