Kyauk Taw resident hit by landmine explosion, loses one leg

A local resident of Kun Own Su village under Kyauk Taw township has lost his right leg as he faced a landmine explosion.

The injured person is identified as U Ba Shwe (47 years old). He was injured by the landmine while collecting bamboos on the mountain range of Kun  Own Su village at around 4 pm on 8 September.

U Maung Ba Sein, elder brother of the injured person, informed that currently he is under medication at Yeo Tayoke hospital.

The doctors stated that U Ba Shwe will have to lose his right leg as it would be amputated above the knee. U Ba Shwe is the sole bread earner for the family having his wife, two sons and three daughters.

Earlier on 5 August, a man from Myit Na village under Min Pya township had to lose one leg in a mine blast. He was collecting firewood in a mountain where a army battalion was stationed and unconsciously put his leg on the landmine.

On 29 August, another individual from Maungdaw township also sustained injuries as he faced a landmine explosion.

 

According to the Rakhine Ethnic Tribes Association (REC), at least seven people have died, and 20 others were injured due to landmine explosions since January to July 2022 across Arakan.
