Narinjara News, 28 March 2023
The Thailand authorities recently arrested at least 77 undocumented Burmese migrant workers from a truck in
Chumphon District of
the country, said Thai media
reports.
The Myanmar workers were arrested along with two Thai drivers who were traveling on Highway No 41 near
Wanthako village in Lanshun town on the
evening of 23 March.
Despite the continued arrests of Burmese workers in that country, the number has not receded in the recent
past, said a person dealing with the
labour affairs.
“Burmese people come here to work as labourers. They have very little opportunities in their places. But if
anyone travels without valid documents,
he/she would be arrested naturally. Despite being arrested repeatedly, the number of people
entering Thailand has not decreased,”
he added.
According to the Thai drivers, they were picked up from Prachaup Khiri Khan and later transported to Hat Yai,
the headquarter of Songkhla district.
They paid Baht 15,000 to the drivers each as the transportation fees.
The Myanmar migrant workers along with the Thai drivers are expected to be taken to Lashun police station
for prosecution under the laws.
According to the various
media reports, more than 400 illegal Burmese workers were arrested there in the month of March (2023).
