Narinjara News, 5 May 2023

Two Myanmar nationals have been arrested by Thailand police when they were riding motorcycles on Mae Sot-Own Phan highway along with two guns.

The incident took place during the evening hours on 1 May. It is learnt that the local Thai authorities initially stopped them for driving their motorcycle with a higher speed.

Later one AK-47 automatic rifle and another gun, details of which are yet to be disclosed, were recovered from their possession.

Both the weapons were wrapped by a fertilizer bag and currently they have been detained at Mae Sot township police station.

"I heard about their arrest last night. They are from Myanmar. We do not know about them, but still we are worried,” said a migrant woman from Myanmar now taking shelter in Mae Sot.

Since the beginning of 2023, the Thai authorities have imposed strict security measures for the Burmese migrants.

Often the Burmese migrants face the authorities’ scanning about their documents related to their stay in Thailand. The practice of checking documents has now been intensified.
