2 Burmese migrants killed and 11 injured in Thailand



A vehicle carrying a group of illegal Burmese migrant workersoverturned on 5 May killing two individuals on the spot and injuring11 others.


The incident took place in Yeong township under Narathiwat district of Thailand as their car ran away without following the direction of Thai police personnel.

According to Thai media outlets, they were asked by the police to stop for inspection, but they ignored it. The accident took place in front of Buke Bakong Mosque of Thapawyot village. The car hit a roadside ditch while fleeing.

The Burmese nationals entered into Thailand illegally and they were planning to leave for Malaysia.


They were given primary medical treatment by the Thai authorities before prosecuting for illegally crossing the border.

After the military coup in Burma, the common people are experiencing severe economic hardships. With no livelihoods, many people have left to neighboring countries to work there, said a Bagkok-based social activist.

According to the activists who deal with labour issues reveal that the number of Burmese people working as migrant labourers in neighboring countries will be about three million.
