2 Burmese migrants killed and 11 injured in Thailand

A vehicle carrying a group of illegal Burmese migrantworkersoverturnedon 5 May killing two individuals on the spot and injuring11 others.


The incident took place in Yeong township under Narathiwat district of Thailand as their car ranaway without following the direction of Thai police personnel.

According to Thai media outlets, theywere asked by the police to stopfor inspection, but they ignored it. The accident tookplace in front of Buke BakongMosque of Thapawyot village. The car hit aroadside ditch while fleeing.

The Burmese nationals entered into Thailand illegallyand they were planningto leave for Malaysia.


They were given primary medical treatment by theThai authorities before prosecuting forillegally crossing the border.

After the military coup in Burma, the common people are experiencing severe economic hardships. Withno livelihoods, many people have left to neighboring countries towork there, said a Bagkok-based social activist.

According to the activists who deal with labour issues reveal that the number of Burmese people working asmigrant labourers in neighboring countrieswill be about three million.
