Some parts of Maungdaw-Angu motor road, which is very important for border trades with Bangladesh aredamaged and hence the people now facedifficulties in transportation in western border localities of Rakhine State.

The road was upgraded to a concrete one in 2017 by the Asia world company to improve the economy ofborder areas with Bangladesh.

However, the road has not been maintained and repaired by the government and it has graduallydeteriorated in many places under Maungdawtownship. Currently, parts of the road between Udaung village and 3 Mai village in the southern partof Maungdaw locality are damaged.

The wheels of vehicles are often stuck on the road. A truck driver said that the road is full of mud wherethe wheels are stuck.

“We had to spend the whole night on the road. Sometimes, the divers have to temporarily repair the portionof the road and move,” he added.

Damaged parts of the road were observed before the recent rains and flood water in the locality.

The motorists have demanded its repairman as soon as possible.  The junta authority normally does notrepair such roads.

Maungdaw-Angu motor road is about 50 miles long and it was built to connect Sittwe with Maungdaw on way toBangladesh border. The road was openedon 1 May 2018.

A 24-feet-long concrete bridge was also damaged by the flood water on 6 August and it was recently repairedand opened on 10 August.

The wooden bridges on Let Kyaw Chung and Maze on Maungdaw-Aung Thae road were also damaged due to floodwater.

Both are being repaired by the government. As no cars and motorcycles are allowed to move over these bridges,local people are facing difficulties,stated a villager from Taman Thar.
