World Teachers' Day, which falls on 5 October every year, was observed in various townships of Rakhine State
including in the capital city of Sittwe.
Rakhine State chief minister U Htin Lin personally attended
the auspicious day organized
at Khaingthazin park in Sittwe and distributed
prizes to the teachers.
Similarly, in Taungup township’s number one basic
education high school 90 teachers
(aged over 70) were felicitated with various offerings.
"I would like to inform that the celebration was nice
as the teachers could meet each
other after a long duration. It's not easy to meet all teachers, but the occasion helped them to meet and pay
mutual
respects," said a school teacher from Maungdaw.
In addition, 15th teacher offering program was held at Kumudra hall in Kyaukphyu township.

In a message from Duwal Lashila, acting president of
the National Unity Government
(NUG), on the sacred occasion the teachers were described as sculptors to shape the future of any country.
"The teachers shape the education, and I would
like to point out that they
are real sculptors who form a fine future for the society and the nation,” he added.
Since the 1962 military coup, the education scenario of
Myanmar had deteriorated as the
successive military dictators did not show
interest in value added education.
World Teachers' Day is an international day held annually on 5
October to celebrate the work
of teachers. Established
in 1994, it commemorates the
signing of recommendation by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and
the the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The 1966 "ILO/UNESCO
Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers" is a standard-setting
instrument that addresses the status and situations of teachers around the
world.
The special day has been celebrated in Myanmar since 2002 and hence this time it was the 22nd anniversary
of World Teachers' Day in the southeast
Asian nation.
