Former NLD candidate for parliament was taken into custody by junta soldiers in Kyauk Phyu

On December 19, U Zaw Win Myint, a former candidate for Parliament and member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was taken into custody by junta forces at Kyauk Phyu, the second-largest city in Rakhine State.

In order to represent the NLD in Pyithu Hluttaw, Zaw Win Myint, 63, ran in both the 2017 by-election and the 2015 national election. He also ran in the general election of 2020 from the Ann Township Number One constituency for a seat in the Rakhine State legislature. However, he lost every election.

He originally hailed from Ann township, Zaw Win Myint is currently residing with his family in Myit Nar Tan ward of  Kyauk Phyu township.

According to a Kyauk Phyu-based young social activist, the junta forces arrested him from his residence at around 6 pm on Tuesday.

"Yes, Zaw Win Myint  was arrested. The soldiers arrived at his residence in the evening hours and picked up him," he added.

Following the military coup in 2021, the military council has persisted in arresting a number of NLD party members, other individuals inclined to it and former NLD administrators under the
pretext of being associated with the National Unity Government (NUG), Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and People's Defense Forces (PDF).

Zaw Win Myint may also be arrested by the junta forces under the pretext of being involved with the NUG, CRPH and PDF.

"Many Rakhine individuals were also arrested alleging their connections to the NLD or PDF. It is possible that Zaw Myint Win was also arrested under the same allegation,” he added.

Narinjara News continues its initiative  to contact Zaw Myint Win’s family members to gather more details about his arrest.

Zaw Myint Win is currently kept at Kyauk Phyu Myoma police station. As of now, it is unclear under which section of laws, he will be sued bythe military council.
