AA confirms capture of Ponnagyun near Sittwe

The  Arakan Army (AA) has fully captured  the town Ponnagyun near Sittwe, the capital city of Rakhine State, on Monday and also gained control over two district-level towns and seven  townships in the last three  months of offensive attacks.

The captured and controlled district-level towns include  Mrauk-U and Paletwa (of Chin State). Seven townships including Mrauk-U, Paletwa, Kyauktaw, Pauktaw, Minbya, Myebon and Ponnagyun were also won.

The AA fighters on 4 March announced that despite the fierce defense of junta forces involving army, navy and air force personnel, they successfully captured the 550th light infantry battalion based in Ponnagyun.

An AA statement indicated that their offensive against the military bases in the Rakhine region will continue.

According to the military analysts, all the battalions in Buthidaung and Rathedaung townships, along with military bases in northern Maungdaw, are currently under offensive by the AA fighters. It is understood that the township will fall one after another to go under AA’s control very soon.
