UN alarmed by reports of food-water-cash shortages, soaring market prices, waterborne diseases in Sittwe

There is a deep concern on food, water and cash shortages, soaring market prices and spread of waterborne diseases in Sittwe, the capital of Arakan State, said United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

During a briefing at the UN headquarters on 20 May, he mentioned Rakhine State while commenting on Myanmar.

"The situation in Sittwe remains deeply concerning due to food and cash shortages, escalating market prices, drinking water scarcity and the increasing prevalence of waterborne diseases,” stated Stephane Dujarric.

The situation in Arakan State is being closely monitored and the UN is deeply concerned about the latest reports of escalating violence and property destruction there, he added.

Regarding Myanmar, the UN continues to closely monitor the deteriorating situation in Arakan State, which poses a significant threat to all communities in one of the country's poorest regions.

“Our team on the ground is deeply alarmed by the latest reports of further escalating violence and destruction taking place in Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships,” he stated.

The humanitarian assistance and essential services have also been disrupted across Arakan State, he observed.

Last week, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (Filippo Grandi) and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (Volker Türk)  called on to cease the fighting, protect civilians, allow immediate and unhindered humanitarian access, provide refuge and safety to fleeing refugees, and facilitate their safe entry into the neighbouring countries.
