The Arakan Army (AA) members successfully rescued 372
prisoners from Thandwe jail and also sent 41 political prisoners to their
families.
An AA statement issued 8 August said that the transferring
of prisoners began on 6 August.
After taking control of the junta’s military bases in
Thandwe, Ngapali (Ma Zin airport) and Thandwe hotel zone on 16 July, the
AA fighters rescued those prisoners. There were many political prisoners
among them. Many were jailed for crimes related to theft, robbery, murder, etc.
During the rescue operation, five prisoners were killed by
shell shrapnel from the junta forces. Two others died from severe
injuries while undergoing treatment, added the statement.
Two political prisoners also died during the rescue
initiatives. The remaining 41 political prisoners were also sick and they
needed urgent medical care. They were provided appropriate treatment as well.
The police and administrative officials of the United League
of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA) gathered necessary information and verified the
identities of those political prisoners.
The prisoners who had committed crimes will remain under
detention. Their offenses will be re-examined and addressed through legal
procedures, concluded the AA statement.
