The 85th anniversary of
Sayadaw U Ottama, a celebrated independence hero of Myanmar, was observed on 9
September in Thailand, Malaysia and South Korea.
The commemoration was
conducted on Sunday by the Arakanese communities living in these countries.
In South Korea, the Arakan
Association-Korea organized the event at Dharma Yarna Sasana Rakhita monastery
in Incheon. Approximately 30 people attended the commemoration in the country.
“Sayadaw U Ottama was
a remarkable personality who placed the common good above his own interest.
When the people of Myanmar were too fearful to oppose British rule, Sayadaw U
Ottama boldly preached political and revolutionary ideas. He laid the foundation
for Myanmar's independence and extended his influence across Asia. His
extraordinary contributions earned him the title ‘Sun of Asia.’ We hold this
ceremony to honor and remember such an admirable person among the Arakanese,”
said Ko Aung Lwin, president of Arakan Association-Korea.
Similar ceremonies
were organized in Johor in southern Malaysia and Maha Chulalongkorn
University in Thailand and also another venue and each function drew hundreds
of Arakanese nationals.
Hailing from Sittwe, Sayadaw
U Ottama played a crucial role in Myanmar's freedom struggle and the Arakanese
monk was one of the first individuals to plant the political seeds for the
nation’s liberation from British colonial rule.
Additionally, he was the
first monk in Myanmar to be imprisoned for political activities.
After his initial release,
he was imprisoned three more times for delivering political speeches across the
country.
Sayadaw U Ottama died from
diabetes on 9 September 1939 at Nyaungdon monastery in Pazundaung township of
Yangon, the
former capital of Myanmar.
The Arakanese people observe
Sayadaw U Ottama’s passing as Sayadaw U Ottama Day with various programs
to honor the great son of the soil.
Due to the military
conflicts in Arakan State, Sayadaw U Ottama Day commemorations were
not organised in the Rakhine region in 2023 and 2024.
