The UK has put sanctions on five companies thatsupply aviation fuel and equipment to Myanmar's military.
On October 29, the British Embassy in Yangonsaid the UK's new sanctions target five firms: Asia Sun Group Company Limited,Swan Energy Company Limited, Myan-Oil Company Limited, Rich Ray Trading CompanyLimited, and Progress Technology Support Company Limited (also called RoyalShune Lei).
Catherine West, the UK's Minister for theIndo-Pacific, said these sanctions come in response to the Myanmar militaryjunta's ongoing human rights abuses and air attacks on civilian targets.
"The human rights abuses across Myanmar,including air strikes on civilian targets by the Myanmar military, areunacceptable, and the impact on innocent people is unbearable. That's why theUK is announcing new sanctions today, aimed at suppliers of gear and air fuelto Myanmar's military," Minister West said in her statement.
She added that the UK is working with the EUand Canada to step up efforts to cut off the Myanmar military's access tomoney, equipment, and resources.
The British Embassy's statement said these newsanctions aim to put more pressure on Myanmar's military and stressed the UK'sstrong support for Myanmar's people in their push for a peaceful, democraticfuture.
The statement also noted that Myanmar'smilitary carried out a record number of air strikes in August, killing dozensof civilians.
