On February 1, commemorating four years since the military junta seize power in a coup, around 500 Myanmar citizens in Japan assembled to demonstrate against the military regime.
Under the banner "Myanmar Spring Revolution: A People's Movement Without Lowering the Flag," demonstrators assembled at 1 pm local time on February 1 at the bustling Shibuya Station in Tokyo. According to protest leaders, they proceeded through the station toward the Myanmar Embassy located in Tokyo.
Protest leader Ko Thant Zaw Htet conveyed to Narinjara News during the demonstration, “Challenging this military dictatorship, rooted for more than 60 years, is tough and severe. The people have sacrificed everything, so I encourage everyone to keep participating in this ultimate fight against the system and this era. Kindly continue to persevere."
Along with the protest, a letter was sent to the Myanmar Embassy, directed to the Japanese Ambassador in Myanmar.
The letter outlined multiple requests concerning the human rights abuses perpetrated by the military junta against the citizens of Myanmar. It called on the global community to act and not disregard the daily airstrikes conducted by the military in ethnic areas, such as Arakan State.
The demonstration, conducted in Tokyo, saw participation from a diverse group of approximately 500 individuals, comprising Bamar, Arakanese, and various other ethnicities.
The military junta took control in a coup on February 1, 2021, marking four years since the takeover.
