Reliable sources indicate that the last cargo ship held by the Arakan Army (AA) has been set free.

A trader knowledgeable about the circumstances informed Narinjara News that the AA had obtained reports suggesting the vessel was transporting illicit drugs and gold ingots. Following the examination of the vessel and finding no illegal items, the AA let it go on February 1.

"They let the ship go after discovering neither drugs nor gold bars," he stated.

The freighter was owned by U Kyauk Taung, a well-known trader from Taungup Town in Arakan State.

The vessel, together with three other freighters, was transporting dried fish and betel nuts from Myanmar. On January 16, it was traveling from Yangon Port to Teknaf Port in Bangladesh when it was stopped by the AA’s coast guard in the Naf River, which is under AA control.

A few days later, the AA let go of two out of the three cargo ships, but the last ship was held for additional examination.

Once the AA seized Maungdaw town in Arakan State on December 8, 2024, which is a crucial spot for trade between Myanmar and Bangladesh, the AA gained control over the entire 271-kilometer border extending from the Naf River estuary.

Reports are now surfacing that the Myanmar military has stopped trade between Yangon and Bangladesh.
