In Myanmar's two western states, Rakhine and Chin, there are 26 townships in total, with 20 having been taken over by the Arakan Army and the Chin Revolutionary Armed Forces.
Of the 17 townships in Arakan (Rakhine) State, only the state capitals Sittwe, Kyaukphyu, and Manaung remain, while in Chin State, among 9 townships, only the state capitals Hakha, Thantlang, and Tedim are still under military council control.
The Arakan Army (AA) has seized 15 townships in Rakhine, which includes Paletwa township in Chin State, whereas the Chin Brotherhood (CB), with support from the Arakan Army and allied forces, has taken Matupi, Mindat, Kanpetlet, and Falam; Additionally, the Chin Council has gained control of Tunzan township.
The Arakan Army is currently active in the remaining cities of Sittwe and Kyaukphyu, and military analysts indicate that hostilities may escalate soon as the city could become a battleground.
Likewise, there are indications that the Chin State authorities might persist in their assault and seize Thantlang, one of the last three townships in Chin State.
The two western regions of Myanmar may soon be the first to gain freedom from the military regime.
