On May 6, the military council declared through its TV channel and newspapers that the ceasefire has been prolonged for an additional month.
The announcement indicated that the ceasefire will be in place from May 6 to 31 to facilitate swift relief and recovery efforts in regions impacted by the earthquake on March 28.
The military council had earlier declared a short-term ceasefire from April 2 to 30 to facilitate aid efforts for those affected by the earthquake.
Despite the military council's recent second extension of the temporary ceasefire, U Tun Win, an ex-parliamentarian from Rakhine state, informed Narinjara that his faith has diminished, as the military actions on the ground and the airstrikes have continued without interruption.
"They merely declared a ceasefire. They are conducting additional military operations on the ground. They are also conducting airstrikes and military operations nearly every day in Rakhine. The regions of Mandalay and Sagaing affected by the earthquake are also facing airstrike assaults. The declaration and the actual situation are at odds," he remarked.
In this second temporary ceasefire, ethnic armed groups and other armed factions are not allowed to interfere with or destroy communication routes relied upon by the public, endanger the lives and property of citizens, assault security forces’ camps and military bases, disrupt and attack military installations, or assemble troops, organize groups, and expand territories in a manner that would threaten peace.
The military council stated that if any of the aforementioned actions occur, appropriate measures will be implemented to safeguard the public.
The Northern Alliance, along with the Arakan Army (AA) and various other rebel factions, has announced a temporary ceasefire to expedite relief efforts for those affected by the earthquake.
Nevertheless, while the military council persists in increasing its presence and strengthening its troops, frequent confrontations with the rebel factions are being reported.
