A minor earthquake registering 5.1 on the Richter scale struck close to Thit Pon village in Man Aung Township, Rakhine State at 01:45 on May 19.
The Myanmar Meteorological Department announced, “On May 19, 2025, at (01) hour, (45) minutes, (26) seconds Myanmar Standard Time, a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of (5.1) on the Richter scale occurred in the Myanmar Sea (approximately (29) miles south of Kyaukphyu), about (90) miles southeast of the Sittwe Seismological Station, positioned at (19.01) degrees North Latitude, (93.58) degrees East Longitude, and (23) kilometers deep.”
The Earthquake Information Center announced, “This morning at 01:45 Myanmar Standard Time, yet another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale struck over 6 miles beneath the small village of Thitpon on Manaung Island, located 36 miles southwest of Kyaukphyu in Rakhine State, western Myanmar.”
Following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that shook Mandalay and Sagaing on March 28, 2025, Myanmar experienced 178 earthquakes by May 18, as per the report from the Myanmar Meteorological Department.
The earthquake that occurred in Manaung Township is the first to strike Rakhine State since the Sagaing earthquake on March 28.
