Narinjara, 29 May, 2025
Reports indicate that Rakhine State is experiencing heavy rainfall due to the strength of a low-pressure system forming in the northwestern Bay of Bengal.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology stated in a press release today, May 29 at 7am, that the low-pressure system remains and could strengthen into a cyclonic storm in the next 18 hours.
The announcement stated, "As of 05:30 Myanmar Standard Time today, the significant low pressure system is anticipated to drift northward gradually and strengthen into a depression within the next 18 hours. The low pressure system is situated in the northwest Bay of Bengal (near the Odisha coast in India), and a significant Well Marked Low Pressure Area (WML) is likely to continue."
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department noted that the low-pressure system in the northwest Bay of Bengal strengthened into a low-pressure area early Thursday.
Situated close to latitude 20.7°N and longitude 88.5°E, it is predicted to shift northward and develop into a depression by 6 am. Owing to the storm's severity, it is anticipated to shift north by 6 am.
Due to the intensity of low pressure, significant rainfall was felt throughout the Rakhine State.
The statement indicated that Rakhine State will experience scattered heavy rainfall with a 100% likelihood of rain.
The Myanmar Meteorological Department stated that the monsoon is extremely intense in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The delta, located along the Rakhine coastline and in the nearby waters, will encounter frequent intense rainfall and extremely high waves. In the midst of the intense rainfall, the sea/land winds are anticipated to hit speeds of 40 to 45 miles per hour.
