The Arakan Army (AA) has taken numerous prisoners of war, including a Lieutenant Colonel from the Military Council, amid the current conflicts in Kyaukphyu Township of Rakhine, where various Chinese initiatives, such as oil and gas projects, are located.
The detained high-ranking military officer is Lieutenant Colonel Kyaw Lin Kyaing, Commander (First Class) of the army division, with an army serial number of Army/37532.
A source familiar with the AA informed Narinjara News Agency that multiple prisoners of war were taken alongside him.
On the afternoon of May 30, near Mindat Taung Village in Kyaukphyu Township, troops from the military council, who were attacking the Arakan Army in a state of panic, clashed. In the confrontation, the Arakan Army seized numerous prisoners of war, which included Lieutenant Colonel Kyaw Lin Kyaing from the forces of the military council,” he stated.
He also mentioned that the ongoing clashes are escalating in Kyaukphyu Township.
"Because of the army's actions, clashes occur nearly every day in Kyaukphyu. The troops of the military council are experiencing defeats with each confrontation. At approximately 3 pm on May 30, troops from the military council positioned at the industrial training school, located roughly 600 meters north of Mindat Taung Village in Kyaukphyu Township, engaged the Arakan Army, leading to a confrontation between the two sides. In the conflict, the Arakan Army seized a significant quantity of firearms and ammunition alongside Kyaw Lin Kyaing.”
In the recent clashes in Kyaukphyu, Brigadier General Kyaw Myo Aung and a warrant officer from the 11th Infantry Division were killed by snipers during an AA attack. Brigadier General Kyaw Myo Aung’s remains were transported from Kyaukphyu to Yangon on May 27 and interred at Mingaladon military cemetery.
In the conflict, the junta forces retrieved the body of Brigadier General Kyaw Myo Aung, while the Arakan Army captured a key commander and over 30 bodies of the military council, along with a quantity of ammunition.
The combat in Kyaukphyu is solely the consequence of the junta’s attack, and the Arakan Army’s fearless defense is inflicting significant losses on the military council.
Kyaukphyu, being the site of numerous significant Chinese initiatives and a key source of foreign currency for the Burmese military government, has the military regime deploying its army, air force, and navy in large numbers to assault AA; however, they are currently facing losses against the AA.
The military council has shifted its approach from defensive to offensive, yet is encountering defeat, as per an AA military source.
According to a military source, the current conflict between the junta and the Arakan Army is still over 6,000 meters away from the Chinese gas pipelines, yet personnel from China and Myanmar are evacuating to ensure their safety.
Another politician observing the war situation in the region informed Narinjara News that both employees and junta army members are abandoning the area because of the fierce fighting, and the Arakan Army is apprehending them daily.
