Reports indicate that the Kyuntharyar Artillery Base, also known as the Khawe Outpost, has been withdrawn from Myebon Township.
This base, located on Kyuntharyar Island to the north of Kyaukphyu Town, plays a crucial role in maritime control along the southern coast of Myebon and dominates the Rakhine Sea coastline.
While the base is situated in Myebon Township, it has been directly controlled by the Kyaukphyu Military Council and has caused significant disruptions to passenger and cargo vessels, as well as fishing boats operating in the area.
Following the onset of fighting in Kyaukphyu Township, the artillery base was threatened by actions from the Arakan Army (AA), preventing the arrival of reinforcements. Consequently, the personnel at the camp withdrew to Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State, according to a local source connected to the ULA/AA in Myebon.
A villager reported, “The Kyuntharyar Khawe camp is located right on the shore, separated from the village only by a fence. The camp had limited personnel—only about 40 members—and now none of them are there. They have retreated to Sittwe.”
This withdrawal took place a month after the intensification of fighting in Kyaukphyu Township, locals said.
According to another source from Myebon linked to the ULA/AA, while the exact date of the withdrawal is unclear, the camp was evacuated after the junta troops abandoned their base. This marked the end of junta control in the entire Myebon Township.
“There are no longer any military bases in Myebon. The township is now completely free from junta forces. However, the navy remains active offshore near Naung Dawgyi and Naung Daw Chey, where local fishing boats continue to be fired upon,” he stated.
Additionally, local administrators alerted residents that landmines had been planted around the artillery base and nearby villages prior to its abandonment. This necessitates mine clearance, and local residents are advised to exercise caution until all mines are removed.
Locals report that the current military council’s navy is actively pursuing fishing boats and small vessels navigating the Sittwe-Kyaukphyu-Myebon waterway. Several naval vessels are patrolling the waters around Myay Ngu Kyun (a) San Taw Shin Kyun, Fadu Kyun, and Sin Tak Maw Kyun in Pauktaw Township, often firing upon and arresting local fishing boats.
