The Chinese government has donated 2,100 tons of food to Bangladesh to aid Rohingya refugees who fled northern Rakhine State, according to a report by UNB on Friday.
This assistance arrives at a critical time, as refugees in Bangladesh urgently require an additional $120 million over the next 12 months to meet their basic needs.
The donation was facilitated by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and officially handed over to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Dhaka.
During the handover ceremony at the WFP offices in Dhaka, the WFP expressed gratitude for the Chinese government’s support.
While the total monetary value of the donation was not disclosed, it is known that the aid will be used to procure 2,100 tons of rice, pulses, and cooking oil, which will provide three months’ worth of food for approximately 45,000 refugees.
The WFP also noted that its full food assistance package for refugees in Cox’s Bazar district is expected to be depleted by October without new contributions.
Additionally, the UN World Food Programme highlighted that the recent influx of about 150,000 new refugees into Bangladesh has further constrained humanitarian operations.
