17-year-old Bangladeshi youth loses leg as landmine explodes on Myanmar border

According to local news in Bangladesh, a 17-year-old boy from Okiya Township in the Cox's Bazar District of the country lost one of his legs after treading on a landmine, a remnant device from the conflict.

Arafat Islam (also known as Badal), age 17 and the son of Khuilla Mia, has been recognized as the wounded youngster.

The mine explosion took place in the Sapmara border region of the Naikhongchhari township, Bandarban district, at about 2 pm on June 22.

According to the report, the mine placed at the border zero line detonated as he was attempting to transport smuggled goods from the border with Rakhine State.

People living nearby heard a loud explosion. They discovered the youngster lying with severe wounds when they went to check it.

Muhammad Mazharul Islam Chowdhury, the Naikhongchhari Township Administrative Officer, and Md. Masrurul Haque, the Naikhongchhari Police Station In-charge, both verified that they had been informed of the incident.

For medical care, the wounded Badal has been transferred to Cox's Bazar District Hospital.(Source and Photo: Ukhiya News)
