There is record rainfall throughout Arakan (Rakhine) State, with flooding occurring in low-lying areas and communities along rivers in certain townships.
Local social activists claim that the areas impacted by the floods include the towns of Tharet Ti Pin and Nyaung Chaung in Kyauktaw Township, as well as at least fourteen communities located along the Pan Myaung Gyi Stream in Minbya Township, which are in desperate need of help, safe drinking water, and food.
According to the APM news story, several other villages in Minbya Township, including Min Phu, Kala Ma Taung, Swe Kaal, Wa Taung, Myin Kay Seik, Chin Seik, To Tan, Don Thar, Don Gyi, Ta Khun Taing, Myin Tin Ma, Lak Khat, Pal Taung, Kap Pe Sha, and others, are also inundated.
Since the first week of July, there has been constant rainfall in Arakan State. The water level of the Pan Myaung Gyi stream, which flows into the Lay Myo River, has risen, resulting in flooding in 14 villages along the stream since the morning of July 8.
At the moment, the water level in Min Phu village is around five feet, in Sek Kaal village it is between four and a half and five feet, and in other villages it is between five and six feet.
Locals are concerned about the possibility of a rise in the Kaladan and Lay Myo rivers, two of the most important rivers in Rakhine State, as a result of the severe rains this year, which are the worst in a decade.
