According to reports, two adolescent sisters from Awa Pyin (2) Village, which is located in Tat Taung town, Ann Township, have drowned while gathering vegetables in what the locals refer to as Hmo Hin (Burmese name: Hngat Gyi Taung) close to the village.
Ma Su Myat Hlaing (b.) Pi Si (16), the older sister, and Ma Su Thet Hlaing (b.) Su Suma (12), the younger sister, were the two sisters who passed away.
The two sisters drowned when they were swimming with three other people from the Karipyin Stream (local name) near the village to Htin Taw Village, according to a ULA member connected to the village administration who spoke with the Narinjara News Agency.
"They had eaten food early and went to pick up Hmo Hin (mushrooms) with their friends. Two sisters drowned in a stream in Htin Taw village around noon."
According to a resident, authorities from the appropriate ministry and village officials of the Araka People's Revolutionary Government (DELP) arrived to gather medical records and take any necessary action in connection with the death.
"It's a tragic accident. Due to the powerful currents and powerful downward force, extreme caution should be exercised while swimming in streams throughout the rainy season. The matter has now gone through the entire procedure with the relevant authorities,” he stated.
This year's rainy season saw 17 persons, both men and women, perish in Thandwe, Maungdaw, Rathedaung, Minbya, and Mrauk-U townships in Arakan state, which is more than in prior years.
In Cheinkhali hamlet, Rathedaung township, there was a drowning on May 21 of this year when four young women, sisters and cousins, drowned while taking a bath in a stream.
A youngster from Rint Ye Kan town in Pauktaw township drowned in a ditch close to their house on the 30th while visiting family in Khon Tai village.
When Ko Aung Aung Moe (24) went fishing in a pond close to Bodhi Kone village in Maungtaw township on June 19, he tragically drowned.
Two Rakhine women from Aung Thu Kha village on the Maungtaw-Angu Maw road drowned on July 1 while attempting to cross a stream in order to provide food to their husbands who were out fishing.
Due to the rise in unintentional drownings during the rainy season, the Arakan State Government has warned against crossing streams without boats through local officials.
Extra caution is required while crossing rivers and streams due to the torrential rains and powerful currents in mountain streams during the rainy season in Rakhine. ( Photo by APM)
