A student from Dagon University and a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Bilin Township Working Group have died in the military jail, according to the Myanmar Political Prisoners Network (PPNM).

As per the PPNM release, Ko Pyay Son Aung, a 44-year-old political prisoner, passed away at Thaton Prison at 1:00 PM on July 19, and Ma Wut Yi Aung, a 25-year-old member of the Dagon University Students Union Central Executive Committee, passed away at Insein Prison today, July 20.

For the first offense, Ma Wut Yi Aung received a three-year jail term, and for the second offense, she received a four-year sentence, for a total of seven years. Ko Pyay Son Aung, on the other hand, was given a six-year prison sentence.

On January 1, 2022, political prisoner Ko Pyay Son Aung was taken into custody. He was tried at the Bilin Special Court and given a six-year jail sentence on April 5, 2022, for violations of Sections 52(a) and 505(a).

"Ko Pyay Son Aung, who was suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and coronary artery disease, collapsed and passed away at 1:00 pm after paying homage to the martyrs who fell on Martyrs' Day," the PPNM statement said. ‎

He was also a member of the NLD working committee in Bilin Township, Mon State.

For opposing the military council's coup d'état, Ma Wut Yi Aung, a student at Dagon University, was taken into custody by the military council on September 14, 2021. She was then given a three-year sentence at Insein Prison under Section 505(a) before being moved to Daik U Prison.

On June 27, 2023, she was given a four-year prison sentence under Section 52(a) after being moved back to Insein Prison from Daik U Prison.

She remained unconscious for a prolonged period of time after being moved to jail as a result of injuries sustained during interrogation.

She was subsequently brought to Insein Hospital for medical care, but as a result of her wounds, she experienced several convulsions, fainting episodes, and cardiac arrests. She passed away from the same wounds today (July 20) at Insein Prison.

According to PPNM, at least 13 political prisoners have passed away in jails this year due to health problems.
