14 Rakhine lawyers form Rakhine Bar Council for rule of law and justice in Rakhine State

The new Rakhine Bar Council was formed on September 19 with the aim of upholding the rule of law and a just society in Rakhine State.

The formation of the Rakhine Bar Council has four aims, to working to up hold the rule of law and justice in Rakhine State; to work together on issues of concern for the people of Rakhine; enhance the role and ability of the new generation of young lawyers and to strengthen the unity and friendship of Rakhine lawyers.

Zaw Zaw Min, general secretary and communication officer of the Rakhine Bar Council, said, “We want to empower Rakhine youth and for lawyers to work together to bring justice to human rights abuses."

He added that fighting in Rakhine State has led to human rights abuses and the Rakhine Bar Council would provide assistance if asked for help with arrests on suspicion of wrongdoing.

The Rakhine Bar Council is made up of 14 lawyers, paving the way for the inclusion of other lawyers and lobbying for more lawyers.

He said he would work with international and civil society organizations to bring justice to human rights abuses in Rakhine State and to the Rakhine people as a whole.
