A villager was killed in a landmine explosion planted
by the military on July 4 in Rakhine State. The deceased was U Hla Maung (age 35)
from Malyikan village in Kyauktaw Township, close to southern Chin state.
He was hit by a landmine while tending cattle in a field near LIB 377 Artillery Battalion based in Kyauktaw at around 1pm on July 4.
He was taken to the nearby Apaukwa Rural Hospital but died of his injuries.
“ Hla Maung died of severe bleeding from a left leg amputation and severe injuries to his other leg. He died in Apaukwa Village hospital” said U Thein Tun, head of the Mettashin Emergency Relief Team.
On July 3, 28-year-old Maung Hla Tun from Upper Khachi Myaung village, who went to cut bamboo near Military Training school ( 9) in Minbya Township, lost his left leg in a landmine explosion and is currently being treated at Minbya Hospital.
On July 1, Than Sein Maung, a 45-year-old resident of Wet Hmaing village near LIB 375 in Kyauk Taw , died on July 2 while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Sittwe.
In Rakhine State, in two months landmines explosions, killing six people and injuring about 10 others.
Myat Tun, director of the Rakhine Human Rights Advocacy Group, said the mines were being planted by the military recently without any fighting with AA and that they were condemning the mines plantings.
