One killed, 5 other injured in Myanmar mortar shelling near international border

At least one was killed and five other people including a Rohingya child sustained severe injuries in a number of firing and mortar shelling from inside Myanmar at Gumdhum in Bandarban district of southern Bangladesh.

The victim has been identified as Md Iqbal (17), said a media report in Dhaka Tribune published on 16 September. The body is kept at Kutupalong MSF hospital, quoting his cousin Erfanul Haque, the media outlet reported.

Three Rohingya refugees from Myanmar also received injuries in the mortar shelling as those landed in no man’s land of the border.

Some locals informed that a number of bullets fell over Konarpara village which created sensation among the villagers.

Earlier, a Bangladeshi citizen named Athwaing Tangchangya (22) was injured in a landmine explosion along the Headmanpara border area at Tumbru. He lost one of his legs in the blast.

The incident took place at around 3:15 pm near pillar no 35 of the international border. According to the locals, Tangchangya went near the border to find his cow and stepped on the landmine.

On 8 September, Bangladesh witnessed a series of firing, artillery and mortar shelling from the Myanmar side for the third consecutive day.

The Bangla government in Dhaka has summoned the Myanmar envoy U Aung Kyaw Moe for the third time over the issue on 4 September. Dhaka also expressed serious concern over the artillery strikes from the Myanmar side as those landed inside the Bangladeshi territory.

Bangladesh foreign minister AK Abdul Momen earlier commented that Dhaka was closely watching the situation in Myanmar.

The Burmese junta admitted that its military personnel launched airstrikes after the Arakan Army (AA) seized a police outpost on the border in Maungdaw township.

On 28 August, the Myanmar border security forces, border guard police personnel hurled mortar shells at Tumbru area in the international border. Two unexploded shells were also recovered from the spot.
