A three-member Myanmar military council delegation led by lieutenant general Phone Myat met with the
Bangladesh chief of the defense staff
general SM Shafiuddin Ahmed at Bangladesh Army Headquarters on 26 October last.
Both the generals discussed various issues related to the development of military ties between the two
neighbouring countries including the exchange
of high-ranking military officers. Phone Myat urged the Bangladesh authority to cooperate in joint natural disaster
management
and sharing of relevant information.
SM Shafiuddin Ahmed raised the issue of refugees from Myanmar and opined that the long-term detention of
a large number of Rohingya refugees
would create security threats in future. He insisted on the Muslim refugees’ speedy return to
Myanmar.
He also urged the Burmese authority to be cautious while conducting military operations in
the
border areas.
The Myanmar delegation expresses its concern for the development and security of their country and expressed
interest in solving bilateral problems
through dialogues.
Phone Myat is the commander of the number 3 special operations group and in command of the operation in
Rakhine State since the beginning.
In the press release, issued by the ISPR, there is no mention about the Arakan Army and also ongoing armed
conflicts in the Rakhine border.
It is hoped that the engagement would help in enhancing the relationship between the two countries
as well as the government armed forces
in the coming days.
