The United Nations Office for the Coordination
of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has released a statement on August 19,
highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance for 18.6 million
people in Myanmar, including 6 million children.
Due to worsening conflicts and severe natural
disasters across the country, an estimated 18.6 million people, including 6
million children, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to a
statement by UNOCHA's Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator a.i. for Myanmar on
World Humanitarian Day, August 19.
UNOCHA reported that aid workers are working tirelessly to provide food, shelter, protection, and other life-saving assistance to those in need. In the first half of 2024, humanitarian efforts reached 2.1 million people with support.
World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize
and honor the brave aid workers who are delivering vital assistance to millions
in need throughout Myanmar. Despite the expanding crisis, these workers
continue to ensure that help reaches those who need it most, the statement said.
The statement also stated the daily risks faced
by both civilians and aid workers due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. It is
crucial that all parties involved in the conflict adhere to International
Humanitarian Law, which requires them to protect civilians and aid workers and
ensure continuous and unobstructed humanitarian access.
The ongoing efforts of those working to assist
the most vulnerable populations in Myanmar are deeply valued. Despite the
significant challenges, their dedication brings hope for reducing suffering and
safeguarding lives, the statement said.
