Muslim man sentenced to imprisonment for protesting against the military coup

A young Muslim man from Thandwe, a district in southern part of Rakhine State of western Myanmar, was sentenced to one year and one month in prison for failing to stand trials for protesting against the military coup.

The imprisoned individual is identified as Zeyar Tun (30 years old), who hails from ward number one in Thandwe district. Tun was arrested on 16 February by the police personnel from his residence and jailed on 3 March, said a relative.

Speaking to Narinjara News, the relative alleged that Tun was not allowed to hire a lawyer. He was charged in the Thandwe township court and sentenced to imprisonment.

He was charged  under section 25 of Disaster Management Act and an additional one month in prison under section 19 of Peaceful Procession Act, said a trusted source.

Tun was accused by the Thandwe deputy police chief Than Lwin under section 2 of Peaceful Procession Act and charged by the Thandwe deputy township administrator Chan Min Latt.

He ran away after he came to know about the warrant for participating in the protests against the coup during February 2021. Later he was arrested when he returned back home.

Similarly, the Mrauk-U district court on 25 February sentenced Ko Min Di Pa, a young writer from Mrauk-U township of Rakhine State, to 10 years in prison against the charges of financing PDF activities.
