A farmer from Pan Myung village under Minbya township, 50 miles east of Arakanese capital city of Sittwe, has been missing for six days since U Aung Tha Maung (56) went to his farmland nearby the village, informed his family members.

“He went to his paddy filed located at Ngettaw Ya old village on 29 August and since then he has not returned back. We even talked to him at around 12 pm but one hour later his phone became out of order,” said his brother U Hla Htwee Maung.

Pan Myung village is presently witnessing encounters between Myanmar Army personnel  and Arakan Army members time to time.

“Our family is worried for Aung Tha Maung. The entire area is now converted into a battlefield where AA members are fighting with security forces,” added his brother.

Aung Tha Maung’s wife and his sister went to an army outpost, located on the top of hills inside the village, to enquire about his where about on 30 August.

“The army officer responded positively with us. He also assured that front line security personnel would be informed about my husband and would call us. But nothing is happening and so we are concerned about his safety,” said  Aung Tha Maung’s wife.

It may be noted that three children were killed in an artillery shell explosion at Pan Myung village on 24 August. The victims were identified as Maung Aung Zin Phyo (6),  Min Htet Kyaw (9) and Ma New New Win (16).

Local villagers informed  Narinjara that the artillery shell was fired by the security forces, but the responsible  army spokesperson alleged that it was done by AA members.
