Dengue cases on rise in Rakhine State



Number of dengue cases this year has reached over 400 in Rakhine State. The list was prepared with data till 30 June, said a health worker belonging to the public health department.

Among the patients, 104 people hail from Kyauk Phyu township,  66 from capital city Sittwe, 63 from Taungup along with a few cases from other townships.

About 20 children aged one and one is with few months are also facing the fever.


“So far, no critical condition has been observed among those patients,” he added.


More than 140 children  from 1 to 4 years old, over 160 children aged 4 to 9 years, over 30  children between the ages of 10 and 14 and over 10 people above 15 years are reported. Young people under 15 years are reported more vulnerable to Dengue, which is caused by mosquito bites. The mosquitos breed in clean water and Dengue emerges as a fatal disease in many cases.

State attorney U Hla Thein, who is a spokesperson for the Rakhine State military council, informed that 426 dengue cases have been recognized. All the patients are hospitalized, and no casualty is reported till date.

Dengue fever is normally reported from May to October during the rainy days. This year, the rain started in May and so the dengue outbreak start reporting.

Narinjara News tried to contact Rakhine State health & treatment department director Dr Kyi Lwin through telephone, but he did not respond.

Last year, till July there were more than 900 dengue cases in the State. The dengue took away the lives of 27 people in 2017, said the health department sources.
