Two
individuals in Maungdaw
Township, Rakhine State, were killed within a span of two weeks due to being
trampled by wild elephants.
The deceased individuals are U Adul Lami, around 60 years old, from
Ngan Chaung (Muslim) village, Maungdaw Township, and U Win Zaw, a 40-year-old
electricity employee from Laung Don village.
On December 9, at approximately 2:00 a.m., U
Adul Lamy was trampled to death by wild elephants while he and his son were
guarding the paddy field at the foot of the mountain near the village.
"The father and son were guarding the
paddy field. At around 2:00 in the morning, two elephants came to eat the rice.
The father and son approached the elephants. However, the elephant attacked
back, and the son managed to escape due to his quick reflexes. Unfortunately,
the father was trampled by the elephant."
On December 1, U Win Zaw, a 40-year-old
electricity employee from Laung Don village, Maungdaw Township, died after
being trampled by a wild elephant while he was sleeping in the field, guarding
the rice.
The Mayu Mountains in Maungdaw Township are
known for being a prominent grazing area for wild elephants in Rakhine State.
During the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) and State Law and Order
Restoration Council (SLORC) regime, some of the captured white elephants were
reportedly obtained from this mountain.
